On
these pages, you will find information about the various community clubhouses
and drop in centers located in the ABHA region.
We
think that there are several reasons to have drop-in centers or clubhouses for consumers of
mental health:
|
 |
They
offer opportunities for consumers to meet and interact with each other
socially |
|
 |
Participants
receive support, encouragement, and information about resources |
|
 |
Through
participation, individuals can reduce isolation and loneliness which
improves mental health |
|
 |
Participants
own and operate the Center, giving a sense of pride and self esteem |
|
 |
The
newsletter provides information about mental health to the general
public, which reduces the stigma of mental illness |
What
are the self-help movement and consumer run services?
The
underlying philosophy of the self-help movement is that some of the best helpers
are those who have experienced similar problems. Self-Help groups typically
provide emotional support and practical help for dealing with problems that are
common to all members. Such groups counter feelings of loneliness, rejection,
discrimination, and frustration by offering mutual support, companionship,
empathy and sharing.
Who
can benefit from a drop-in center?
Anyone
who has experienced emotional problems, has received treatment, and would like
to meet with people having similar difficulties in a relaxed, friendly
atmosphere.
